Department of Government and International Studies (GIS)

The Department was established in 1994. It trains students in different aspects of political science, with a strong emphasis on international relations and comparative politics, and in European Studies. The Department offers two undergraduate programmes:

  • BSocSc (Hons) in GIS (political science, with an emphasis on comparative politics and international relations); and
  • BSocSc (Hons) in European Studies (trans-disciplinary, with an emphasis on the study of French- and German-speaking areas in Europe).

The Department also contributes to teaching in the Global and China Studies programme, and participates in several of the Faculty’s master’s programmes:

  • Master of Public Administration;
  • Master of Arts in Global Society; and
  • Master of Social Sciences (Contemporary China Studies).

GIS plays an important role in the internationalisation efforts of the University and the research endeavour on Smart Societies, being the Faculty niche research area (http://sosc.hkbu.edu.hk/en/FNRA).

The Department is seeking a qualified candidate to fill an assistant professor position. We welcome applications with research interests in any of the following domains and especially public administration:

  • changing foundations of international relations (including Hong Kong, China and the World; Chinese foreign policy and international dimensions of European integration);
  • international political economy;
  • Chinese, Hong Kong and East Asian Politics; European politics;
  • social and protest movements; and
  • urban politics and comparative public administration.

Assistant Professor (Public Administration) (PR0223/19-20)  

The appointee will strengthen the Department’s research and contribute to teaching in one or more of the following areas: (i) public administration; (ii) Hong Kong or Chinese Politics, Government and Administration; (iii) international political economy; and (iv) qualitative and quantitative research methods. He/She is also expected to apply for research grants. 

Applicants should have a relevant PhD degree, appropriate teaching and research experience in higher education and a solid publication record.

This is a tenure-track position. Initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term contract of three years commencing September 2020. Re-appointment thereafter will be subject to mutual agreement. 

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
