As Executive Officer you will be the Company Secretary for the Society. You will be accountable for the operations of the Society, through guidance and actions from the President of the Society, the Board of Trustees, the Council and the Committees of Council.

You will manage the operational running of the Society to ensure that the obligations and aims of the Society, under its charitable status, are met. This includes amongst other strategic planning of resources and direction of the Charity; supervision and work load control of other staff members and consultants; administration of the Charity and Company ensuring accurate, financial management and reporting.

You will have a professional qualification/relevant degree or significant experience in a similar role. You will also have knowledge of company contract law, Charity commission requirements and company governance and experience in maintaining budgets in line with corporate standards. You will be able to work to tight deadlines, manage multiple tasks simultaneously and have excellent IT and communication skills, including web-page maintenance.

The British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) was founded in 1947 and is an established international membership organisation and charity committed to the study of soil in its widest aspects. With over 800 members, it is funded primarily through income from publications and subscriptions. The Society acts as a forum for the exchange of ideas and provides a framework for representing the views of soil scientists with other organisations and decision making bodies. In 2010 the Society became an incorporated charity, merging with the Institute of Professional Soil Scientists.
