Role Description

The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM) is a leading provider of postgraduate level engineering education, research and technology support to individuals and organisations. At the forefront of aerospace, manufacturing and transport systems technology and management for over 70 years, we deliver multi-disciplinary solutions to the complex challenges facing industry.

Our shared, stated values help to define who we are and underpin everything we do: Ambition; Impact; Respect; and Community. Each of our four values are supported by a high-level statement and framework to guide the way we behave and shape our decisions, to find out more please visit our website: https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/about/about

Cranfield Manufacturingis one of the eight themes at Cranfield University offering world-class and niche post-graduate level research, education, training and consultancy. We are unique in our multi-disciplinary approach by bringing together design, materials’ technology and management expertise. We link fundamental materials research with manufacturing to develop novel technologies and improve the science base of the manufacturing research. Our capabilities are unique, with a focus on simulation and modelling, and sustainability.  They also include work in composite manufacture, metallic glasses, nano-materials (graphene, coatings and sensors), low energy casting, thermal barrier coatings and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM).

Established in 1961, the Welding Engineering and Laser Processing Centre (WELPC) is the only specialist welding research centre in UK academia. The Centre provides fundamental, strategic and applied research in the field of welding science and engineering along with postgraduate studies. The Centre has established internationally leading positions in the fields of additive manufacture, laser welding and processing, residual stress management and advanced arc welding processes.

Through the research and development in wire plus arc additive manufacture (WAAM) process the WELPC has established a world leading position in Additive Manufacture (AM) of large scale engineering structures. The research programme within the centre has generated a large amount of industrial and research interest. The programme’s vision is to transform metal additive manufacture, by pioneering new high build rate wire-based processes to produce net-shape large-scale engineering structures.  To support the WAM research programme we are commissioning a new £1.4M WAM research facility featuring multiple robots, CNC systems and multiple energy sources including a 10kW and 2 x 6kW laser systems.

We are seeking to recruit a Senior Lecturer to support our expanding research and teaching activities in Welding Engineering and Metal Additive Manufacture. The key elements of the role will involve contributing in terms of teaching, setting exams and marking in all modules, along with helping to supervise group/individual projects, and using their current network in the industries, the successful applicant will secure small funding for these projects.  There is also the opportunity to work on the creation of a short course in the area of Welding Metallurgy plus Advanced Welding Processes.

The successful applicant will have excellent interpersonal skills, necessary to liaise with work colleagues and academic partners as well as supervising students. You will need to have a PhD in Metallurgy and a demonstrable track record of high quality research or technology development, and experience of working with industry as you will be involved in developing research proposals and securing industry funded research projects as projects for doctoral study with suitable industrial partners.  Experience and/or qualifications in teaching are highly desirable.  In turn, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities for career development in this academic position, and to be at the forefront of world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.

At Cranfield, we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. We particularly welcome female applicants and actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking.  To further demonstrate our commitment to progressing gender diversity in STEM, we are members of WES & Working Families, and sponsors of International Women in Engineering Day.
