Level A or B ($86,587 – $115,495) plus an employer contribution of up to 17% superannuation will apply

Fixed term position for 3 years, starting March 2020

Conduct cutting edge research in sedimentology, stratigraphy and salt tectonics in order to solve problems in interpreting the subsurface that are of direct relevance to the petroleum industry, both within Australia and globally.

In this role, you will contribute to improving understanding of the stratigraphy of the Adelaide Rift Complex whilst also contributing to global themes in geology such as geochronology, basin analysis and Neoproterozoic Earth.

It is expected that as the successful candidate, you will develop a strong local and global network of collaborators, spanning academia, government and industry. There will be opportunities for travel within Australia in order to meet with interested companies, and to conduct fieldwork in the Ikara - Flinders Ranges, South Australia.

The role will be research-focused (80%), with an expectation of some contribution to teaching and School business (e.g. external engagement), with opportunities for leadership and skills development.

To be successful at Level A you will need:

• A higher degree or near completion (PhD or equivalent) or in sedimentary geology, with a specialisation in at least one of the areas of expertise outlined below.
  • Sedimentology and stratigraphy of clastic and mixed clastic-carbonate strata
  • Salt tectonics
  • Petroleum geoscience (subsurface data analysis)
• Ability to work constructively within a research group that includes students, post-doctoral researchers, senior academic staff, professional staff and collaborators that include professional geoscientists and engineers from industry and government, and under the direction of a supervisor.
• The ability to lead substantial fieldwork campaigns in remote locations with minimal supervision, and to prioritise tasks to achieve project objectives within timelines.
• Experience in teaching University students and/or professionals.
• Evidence of ability to undertake, complete and write-up scientific research.

In addition to the above, to be successful at Level B you will need:

• A PhD in sedimentary geology with specialisation in one of the areas of expertise outlined below.
  • Sedimentology and stratigraphy of clastic and mixed clastic-carbonate strata
  • Salt tectonics
  • Petroleum geoscience (subsurface data analysis)
• Demonstrated ability to work constructively within a research group that includes students, post-doctoral researchers, senior academic staff, professional staff and collaborators that include professional geoscientists and engineers from industry and government, and under the direction of a supervisor.
• A track record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
• Proven ability to lead substantial fieldwork campaigns in remote locations with minimal supervision, and to prioritise tasks to achieve project objectives within timelines.
