Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic invites excellent scientists to apply for a POSTDOC POSITION in the field of Cognitive and Evolutionary Science of Religion

Description:

The Laboratory for the Experimental Research of Religion (LEVYNA) is looking for a creative scientist who would use experimental approaches to tackle questions regarding the evolution of religion with a specific focus on religious intra- and inter-group cooperation and conflict. The post-doctoral appointment will be partially dedicated to the development of customized economic-game scenarios and behavioral experiments that would tap into inter-group conflict and that would assess the role of religious beliefs and behaviors in defining and shifting in-group/out-group boundaries.

The duties of the successful candidate will include designing and executing experimental studies, including data collection at various field sites; conducting statistical analyses; and writing up research papers on the topic of the current call. Furthermore, the candidate is also expected to help LEVYNA Ph.D. researchers to develop their ideas and instruct them on the use of evolutionary game theory, experimental design, and statistical analysis.

The successful candidate should:

  • be a researcher who has received a PhD or its equivalent within the last 7 years (on the date
    of employment commencing)
  • be a researcher who has worked at least two whole years in the last three years outside the territory
of the Czech Republic in the field of research with a working time of at least 0.5 full-time equivalent, or who has been a PhD student (or equivalent) abroad
  • have a publishing record – in the last three years at least two publication outputs registered in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science, Scopus or ERIH PLUS databases and at the same time publications such as “articles”, “books”, “book chapters”, “letters” and “reviews”
  • hold Ph.D. in a discipline related to the current call such as anthropology, evolutionary biology, psychology,  or religious studies
  • demonstrate experience in conducting interdisciplinary and collaborative experiments in the lab and in the field and, ideally, experience with managing cross-cultural data sets
  • have substantial expertise in evolutionary game theory and its application in behavioral experiments using economic games
  • be comfortable with advanced statistical methods, optimally in R
  • demonstrate written and spoken English proficiency

The application should include:

  • CV including a summary of education and research experience, publication activity, participation in research projects, previous contracts and further information proving the above mentioned
  • a scanned copy of the PhD diploma or an official letter certifying submission of a doctoral thesis for thesis defence and the planned defence date
  • Cover Letter detailing previous and current work in the field of cognitive and evolutionary science of religion and motivation for pushing this field forward using a combination of lab and field experiments
  • contact information for at least three referees

MU offers the opportunity to get:

  • the post-doctoral position for two years which includes a competitive salary with fringe benefits
  • work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative team of experimentalists tackling the evolution and functioning of human cognitive mechanisms facilitating religious cognition, behavior, and institutions
  • access to the HUME Lab research infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment and services for experimental research focused on a variety of aspects of the human condition
  • welcome service for the successful candidate and his/her family

Anticipated start date: September 2020 (exact date negotiable)
