Job Description Summary

Join an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional project researching the 2020 U.S. presidential election. As the team member directly responsible for data management, you will work independently to integrate disparate data streams with respondent data from multi-wave election-related survey panels.

Job Description

A strong candidate will have an understanding of computational methods and data models as well as the ability to apply data integration skills across different data domains. As an employee of the University of Pennsylvania, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate with other technologists solving similar problems, and to support research that matters while using your existing skills and expanding your technological toolkit.

Responsibilities, Data Analyst C/D:

  • Merging and processing large, diverse streams of data including video, images, text, geographic, demographic, survey, and other data.
  • Performing basic data wrangling, cleaning, integration, and propagation.
  • Working with researchers to generate computational text analyses.
  • Collaborating with both the research team and the technology team to increase automation, develop internal tools, and deliver data segments as needed.

 Additional responsibilities, Data Analyst D

  • Supporting data-driven research decision processes through development of analytical tools using statistical and data visualization software.
  • Designing, developing and implementing data standards and procedures.
  • With limited direction, managing all aspects of project data integration based on project needs and faculty input.
  • Contributing research/data analyst education and experience to study design, in conjunction with faculty researchers.

Qualifications

Data Analyst C:

  • BA/BS in quantitative field (Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering) and a minimum of 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Ability to work independently and manage project-wide data federation with limited technical supervision.

Data Analyst D:

  • Master’s degree or higher in quantitative field (Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering) and a minimum of 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Ability to work independently and manage project-wide data federation without direct technical supervision.

Both levels:

  • Real world experience with querying languages (e.g. SQL) and database structures.
  • Understanding of the best practices for the unification of data streams.
  • Familiarity with tools used by data scientists and academic researchers (R, SPSS, Stata, ArcGIS).
  • Knowledge of Python or a comparable scripting language.
  • Experience working in an academic research environment is big plus.
  • An understanding of survey variable construction and coding.

Position Length

This is a 2-year term-limited position with an end date of December 31, 2021.
