Applications are invited for appointment as Professor in Urban Studies/Planning in the Department of Urban Planning and Design (Ref. 499510), to commence in summer 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate may be considered for direct tenure, and may also be appointed as Head of the Department for a three-year term. Headship re-appointment will be subject to the University’s established procedures. 

HKU’s Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) is an internationally leading planning school with excellence in teaching and research in urban studies and urban planning. Its vision is to help reshape urban planning and policy in Hong Kong, China, the Belt and Road Region and elsewhere with its world-class urban science and policy analytics. The Department seeks an outstanding urban academic with proven international leadership in the field. Depending on background, interests and preference, the appointee may also be appointed as Head of Department, either immediately or after a settling in period.  Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Urban Studies/Planning or a related field and specialize in at least one area of urban studies. They should also have a very strong track record of publishing in top journals and of winning competitive grants, versatile academic ability and personality, proven managerial skills, a visionary mind and ability to inspire, and strong connections with the industry. A track record of research in Asia will be an advantage but is not essential for the right candidate. DUPAD is a young and dynamic department and proven skills and reputation in mentoring younger academics is essential.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
