Summary of Position and Key Responsibilities

The School of Arts & Sciences is seeking a Mathematics Faculty to have an active involvement in the development, planning, preparation and undertaking of all academic upgrading initiatives related to Math instruction within the duration of their contract. This individual is expected to teach two/three cohorts of 15-20 international students from Central Asia by engaging students in problem-solving along with concrete examples and applications to abstract ideas. The purpose of the Mathematics Faculty Member is to ensure students are prepared for the rigors of mathematics at a university level.

Overall Programme Outcomes for Math

The Mathematics Faculty will teach a series of Math courses over 2.5 semesters and will be responsible for engendering the following learning outcomes among students:

After Semester 1, UCA students will be able to:   

  • Apply mathematical reasoning skills to identify the scope of complex mathematical problems.
  • Select the mathematical techniques and methods required to solve discrete mathematics problems.
  • Use computational strategies related to Graph Theory, Combinatorics, Probability, Statistics, and Number Theory to model and explore concepts, ideas, topical issues and local context.
  • Justify solutions through mathematical arguments that integrate multiple concepts.
  • Use a variety of ways to represent and communicate the processes used and solutions to discrete mathematics problems.

After Semesters 2 and 3 (half-semester), UCA students will be able to:   

  • Apply foundational mathematical reasoning and computation skills to complex mathematical problems.
  • Select the mathematical techniques and methods required to solve calculus and vectors problems.
  • Use computational strategies related to Limits, Continuity, Derivatives, Integrals, and Vectors to explore concepts, ideas, topical issues, and local context.
  • Justify solutions through mathematical arguments that integrate multiple concepts.
  • Use a variety of ways to represent and communicate the processes used and solutions to calculus and vectors problems.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • A Master’s Degree from a globally recognised university in Math or a related discipline where the individual had the opportunity to use advanced statistical methodologies would be ideal
  • Teaching Certification from a globally recognised university
  • Experience (5+ years) in teaching Math to high school, community college and/or university students 
  • Fluency in English is required, knowledge of Russian is an asset

Desirable Attributes 

  • A PhD from an internationally recognised university would be an asset 
  • Experience teaching Calculus 1, Discrete Math and Statistics
  • Experience with Math curriculum development 
  • Experience in developing and delivering training modules to other teachers, tutors, mentors, etc.
  • Experience managing student projects 
  • Professional familiarity with Central Asian secondary and post-secondary education landscape would be an asset 
  • Advanced Russian and some knowledge of Kyrgyz, Tajik or Kazakh would be an asset 

Rank will be based on the candidate’s prior experience and record and be approved by the Faculty Appointments and Promotions Committee of UCA.
