About the position

We have a vacancy for a professor/associate professor in Production Technology at Department og Geoscience and Petroleum (IGP), https://www.ntnu.no/igp.

The Department consists of the six research groups Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics, Geology, Geophysics, Mineral production and HSE, Reservoir engineering and petrophysics and Well construction and production systems. The present position within Production Technology is organized in the research group of Well construction and production systems.

The professorship has special responsibility for teaching and research in the field of petroleum production technology.

The petroleum engineering part of the department covers the specialization disciplines of drilling technology, production technology and reservoir engineering. Production technology is a multidisciplinary specialization encompassing the extraction, processing and transport of reservoir fluids. Extraction includes near-wellbore and wellbore flow, processing includes unit operations on platforms and receiving facilities and transport includes fluid flow to and from platforms and receiving facilities. Production technology involves basic engineering and problem-solving skills with an emphasis on the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer and solid mechanics to design, analyze, manage, optimize and troubleshoot hydrocarbon production systems.

The position reports to the Head of Department.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • The professor/associate professor has special responsibility for teaching and research in the field of petroleum production technology.
  • In addition to teaching of courses at basic and advanced levels and academic research, the selected candidate will be responsible for research related to modeling, simulation and experimentation within the fields of petroleum production engineering in cooperation with industry. Candidates therefore should also document wide cooperation with the industry on the relevant issues.
  • The professor/associate professor is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff in the department.
  • The professor/associate professor is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching program, including continuing education. 
  • The professor/associate professor will supervise master and doctoral students
  • The professor/associate professor must agree to participate in administrative work.

Qualification requirements

The applicant must have high-quality knowledge of the engineering skills and fundamentals used in production technology including tools such as mathematical modeling, programming, use of commercial software, laboratory and field experimentation. The applicant must also be familiar with the working processes, engineering tasks, systems and components used in hydrocarbon production.

An important requirement is demonstrated research and development work, including publications and other disseminations of the results achieved. Experience from industry, engineering, consulting and international activities are considered valuable. Experience working with research programs, funding applications and management of research funds are also considered valuable.

Professor:

The position of Professor requires university education at doctoral level and demonstrable academic excellence in the relevant subject area.

The applicant’s research must be documented and of high, international quality, showing both breadth and depth. Research activity and output must demonstrate an independent research profile and the ability to take up new research issues. Continuous research activity is a prerequisite for professorial positions. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within the subject area. The greatest emphasis is placed on academic work undertaken during the past five years, excluding statutory leave.

Emphasis will be placed on ability and experience in initiating and leading research and development of the field of area, and in obtaining external funding for research.

In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, the candidate must document

  • Development in teaching and counselling of students over time
  • Extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master/PhD level
  • Participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment

Associate Professor:

The position of Associate Professor requires university education at doctoral level in petroleum engineering or similar subject areas such as mechanical or chemical engineering and demonstrable academic excellence in the relevant subject area.

Emphasis will be placed on ability and experience in initiating and leading research in the subject area. Strong emphasis will be placed on publication of research results in recognized international journals within the subject area. Particular focus will be placed on academic work during the past five years, excluding statutory leave (depending on the disciplinary tradition).

Other requirements:

The successful applicant will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated. 

Those who do not have formal qualifications in teaching at university level and who cannot provide documentation of equivalent qualifications must complete an approved pedagogical development programme within two years of appointment.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

We offer 

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Professor (code 1013) is normally from NOK 650 000 to NOK 1 050 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor (code 1011) is normally from NOK 600 000 to NOK 900 000 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund,

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.

The best qualified applicants will then be considered by an external appointments panel and the most suitable applicants will be invited to interview and to deliver a lecture to undergraduate students.
