We are currently seeking qualified applicants for a part-time position to teach a Capstone Implementation course in our Master of Science in Threat and Response Management program beginning in Winter 2019. Current University faculty and staff, as well as professionals working in relevant positions outside of the University, are eligible to apply. The course will be offered at our campus in downtown Chicago.

The face of emergency management is changing rapidly. Alongside traditional threats and disasters, governments, businesses and communities are facing emerging challenges of climate change, infrastructure protection and cyber security. Combining academic inquiry with emergency management practice, the Master of Science in Threat and Response Management program helps students to prepare for, respond to, and recover from crises and disaster.

As a culminating experience, students put into practice the knowledge and skills they learned during their coursework through a Capstone project. The project is a degree requirement and is completed during the last three quarters of their program. It is designed to offer students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on real-life emergency management problems.

The Capstone Implementation course is the second in the three-quarter capstone sequence. Students work through a 10-week schedule to implement an emergency management solution and complete the deliverables identified in their prior Capstone Proposal project course. The Implementation lecturer will guide students as they spend 80-100 hours finalizing the work on their research proposal.

Responsibilities

• Develop syllabus including monthly class schedule, review draft sections of research proposals, and provide substantive feedback on research development.
• Develop and execute in-class content (lectures, exercises/activities, and/or lab) related to implementing solutions.
• Hold office hours. Instructors are expected to spend at least 3-6 hours per week meeting with students outside of classroom hours.
• Grade assignments, return comments and grades to students via Canvas course site in timely manner.
• As an executive program, a standard course includes three in-person class meetings over a 10-week quarter (Saturdays, 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm). Office hours and student consultations must be held weekly. Additional lab or class time may be required each month.
• If using online instruction, you must plan and create content in conjunction with Graham School's online instruction design team. Note, adequate time and planning is required for this option.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a background in:

• Academic and peer-review writing
• Research design
• Presenting scientific results
• Background in a relevant field such as emergency management, social sciences, public policy, public health, legal and ethical issues, homeland security, or a related field

Additional information or requirements:

• Qualified applicants must have a graduate-level degree in a relevant field.
• Candidates with prior teaching experience and/or relevant practical experience are strongly preferred.
