Who we are
Music is located in the School of Performing Arts at The University of Otago and offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in music performance, composition, ethnomusicology and musicology, studio production and music technology, and music and theatre. Our scholars and performers have international profiles and cover many diverse areas, including include theory and practice. The School is strong and forward-looking, dedicated to excellence and innovation in the various disciplines, which include theatre and dance.
The Role
We are seeking to appoint a permanent, full-time (confirmation path) Lecturer in Music. In this role, undertake teaching primarily in the area of song-writing and musicology and teach other departmental courses including summer school where needed.
You will also be required to undertake research in your area of expertise, supervise undergraduate and graduate research projects and be actively involved in the recruitment of new students.
In addition, you will contribute to the effective and efficient running of the School and its responsibilities within the University and wider community.
Your Skills and Experience
As well as song-writing and musicology, the successful applicant should be able and willing to teach music theory (harmony, and other musical materials). Other areas of musical expertise may be considered.
In addition, you will also have:
- Doctoral degree (DMA or PhD) or equivalent, as well as relevant professional experience, and therefore be eligible to supervise postgraduate students.
- Experience in teaching and coordinating courses at university level.
- Active research portfolio as evidenced by quality publications (including compositions, performances and other practice-based research outputs).
- A strong commitment to developing collaborative working relationships with colleague.
It would be an advantage if the candidate was able to undertake professional practice in contemporary song-writing.
