About the position

We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate related to the topic "Hydrodynamic performance of ship propulsion and resistance in a seaway" at The Department of Marine Technology.

Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships is an expressed focus area for the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to contribute to the global fight against climate change. Improving energy efficiency performance of new and existing ships is one of the strategies. The performance of a ship in operation is influenced by the physical environment, e.g. by actions from wind and waves. However, resistance testing of ships is still typically performed in calm water conditions. There is a need for more research on the integrated hydrodynamic performance of ships in operational conditions, related to energy efficiency.

The research work of the PhD project will focus on the hydrodynamic performance of ship propulsion and resistance in operational conditions. Research methods will include development of efficient numerical simulation models and physical model experiments for validation. Application of the numerical model as a "digital twin" for a ship will be investigated to examine the hydrodynamic model relative to real-time measurements, which in turn could facilitate operational monitoring of ship performance.

The candidate will be associated with SFI Smart Maritime (www.smartmaritime.no), hosted by SINTEF Ocean, and SFF AMOS (www.ntnu.edu/amos) at NTNU. The candidate will also be included in relevant research projects where the department is a partner.

The position reports to David Kristiansen (Associate Professor).

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Complete a training component as part of the PhD degree of a minimum of 34 ECTS.
  • Participate in research group activities at the Department of Marine Technology, SFI Smart Maritime and SFF AMOS.
  • Participate in international activities such as conference attendance and research collaboration.
  • Complete and publish original research work under supervision, sufficient for attainment of a PhD degree.
