As one of the most outstanding Departments of Archaeology in the UK, we have developed a world-leading reputation for excellence in teaching, research and the employability of our students. We are regularly ranked one of the top two Archaeology departments in the UK (e.g. Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, The Guardian University Guide 2019, Complete University Guide 2019) and one of the top six globally (World University QS rankings 2019).

Our academics are shaping the future of our discipline with world-leading research that spans all aspects of archaeology, from the local to the global and the social to scientific. Our distinctive approach to research-led teaching ensures our programmes are cutting edge and intellectually stimulating for our 400+ students, while our state-of the art laboratories specializing in materials analysis, artefact conservation, isotopes, DNA, microscopy/geoarchaeology, informatics, human remains, and thermoluminescence support our students in achieving outstanding and original research at all levels.

We are building upon our strengths by appointing a talented and ambitious Assistant Professor in the field of Human Bioarchaeology and Forensic Science. Expanding our current research and teaching strengths in Bioarchaeology, the new postholder will develop world-class research and teaching in the field of Human Bioarchaeology and cognate Forensic Sciences. We particularly welcome applications from those with case-work experience in international forensic contexts.

The successful candidate will pursue research that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour, commensurate with the Department of Archaeology’s continuing emphasis on international excellence, and demonstrated by outstanding publications. They will bring experience and ambition in terms of seeking out national and international funding opportunities and develop research impact beyond the Institution. They will also develop and pursue international research collaborations to further enhance the Department’s world reputation in Human Bioarchaeology and Forensic Science. They will develop our vibrant research postgraduate community, by attracting students of exceptional calibre from Britain and abroad to study with us at Durham.

Bringing excellent communication skills and teaching experience, the successful candidate will take the lead on delivering and developing teaching on the MSc in Human Bioarchaeology and Palaeopathology. They will contribute to teaching on the MSc in Bioarchaeology, and more broadly to our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, combining training in archaeology, bioarchaeology and forensic related areas. They will also contribute to the development of a new MSc in Archaeology and Forensic Science programme and explore the potential for collaboration with other departments and research centres as well as external organisations. The successful candidate will develop innovative practical and applied training in Human Bioarchaeology and Forensic Science for both our undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the collegial and administrative activities of the Department and demonstrate leadership with an academic context.
