Role Description

The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM) is a leading provider of postgraduate level engineering education, research and technology support to individuals and organisations. At the forefront of aerospace, manufacturing and transport systems technology and management for over 70 years, we deliver multi-disciplinary solutions to the complex challenges facing industry.

Our shared, stated values help to define who we are and underpin everything we do: Ambition; Impact; Respect; and Community. Each of our four values are supported by a high-level statement and framework to guide the way we behave and shape our decisions, to find out more please visit our website: https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/about/about

Cranfield Manufacturingis one of the eight themes at Cranfield University offering world-class and niche post-graduate level research, education, training and consultancy. We are unique in our multi-disciplinary approach by bringing together design, materials’ technology and management expertise. We link fundamental materials research with manufacturing to develop novel technologies and improve the science base of the manufacturing research. Our capabilities are unique, with a focus on simulation and modelling, and sustainability.  They also include work in composite manufacture, metallic glasses, nano-materials (graphene, coatings and sensors), low energy casting, thermal barrier coatings and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM).

This high profile role will provide global thought leadership in sustainable manufacturing systems research and teaching, and lead this successful Centre at Cranfield.  It will entail understanding the current research issues, challenges and opportunities, and developing strategies to ensure Cranfield stays at the forefront in the field.  The successful applicant will be a global leader in their area and make a significant impact on the shape and future direction of the Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre through their strong leadership of the Centre’s high calibre teams and contribution to its research activities.

The successful candidate will lead research and teaching in the Centre, maintain and extend our strong relationships with industry both nationally and internationally to further build the Centre’s income and reputation, and ensure effective people leadership and financial management.  You will also be expected to actively contribute to the Manufacturing Executive Team, across the School and University, supporting a ‘one university’ approach, as well as working with the Director of Manufacturing to develop and support future strategy.

In addition to having a PhD or equivalent in a subject relevant to sustainable manufacturing systems, you will already have an excellent publication track record and there will be an expectation of continuing to publish high impact work in top peer reviewed journals as well as contributing to our internationally renowned MSc programmes, with top-quality research-led teaching and student supervision.

With an outstanding ability to provide intellectual leadership, internally and externally, you will have led and developed high performance teams, be an effective networker, and able to influence at all levels with excellent communication and problem solving skills.  In turn, the successful applicant will have exciting opportunities for career development in this key senior position, and to be at the forefront of world leading research and education, joining a supportive team and environment.
