Department of Biological Science

Location: Egham
Salary: £43,660 to £51,687 per annum - including London Allowance
Closing Date: Monday 10 February 2020
Interview Date: Wednesday 26 February 2020

Permanent, Full time

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Metabolomics who uses mass spectrometry to answer both fundamental and applied biological questions. We invite applications from candidates with research interests in the fundamental biological processes underlying health, normal human function, nutrition or biotechnology for health, using metabolomics, microbiomics, or proteomics. The appointee will complement the research and teaching expertise in the Department of Biological Sciences within the School of Life Sciences and the Environment.

Applicants will hold a PhD degree in a relevant discipline. They will have experience in generating high-quality publications and success in gaining research funding from the UK research councils or other sources, such as third stream income, for instance, from the provision of analytical training schools. Applicants are expected to contribute to the Department’s teaching portfolio in biochemistry and/or biotechnology and to the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, including the supervision of research projects for our Biomedical Sciences degree students, and being involved in the organisation of placements and liaisons with industry and research institutes. We strive for excellence in research, in the dissemination of research outcomes and in teaching. We are therefore looking for candidates with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

The Department’s expertise spans the biological sciences  and is organised in three main research centres which focus on biomedical sciences, plant molecular science and ecology, evolution and behaviour; areas which potentially interface with metabolomics. This post aims to build on and expand our research in –omics technologies by using and applying our state of the art hyphenated mass spectrometry instruments. We anticipate that the appointee will build a research programme that uses these facilities, acquire grant funding and produce high quality research outputs in this area.

In return we offer a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including generous annual leave and training and development opportunities. The post is based in Egham, Surrey where the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great Park and within commuting distance from London.

For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Professor Vincent Jansen, Head of Biological Sciences <HODbiologicalsciences@rhul.ac.uk>.
