An exciting postdoctoral research position working at the forefront of plant growth predictive modelling

We are seeking a researcher as part of a large interdisciplinary team working on digital agriculture. The overarching aim is optimising resource consumption (including water, chemical and energy) in the viticulture sector. It has been estimated that implementation of digital agriculture will increase the gross value of agricultural production by $20.3 billion (Leonard et al, 2017), translating to $706M for the grape and wine sector. The broader project will better align water application with quality/quantity/disease management targets, optimising the use of this now very valuable resource and the energy required to access it.

This position builds on past developments in grapevine growth modelling and will incorporate novel approaches of grapevine canopy imaging including machine learning. The candidate is expected to collaborate effectively with the larger research team and contribute to the development of process models of grapevine development as a foundation for management scenarios at high spatial and temporal detail.

There are likely to be significant opportunities to both develop original research outcomes and work closely with the viticultural industry to co-create tools that will help improve vineyard performance and optimise resource consumption.

To be successful you will need:

  • A PhD in a discipline related to environmental modelling (including hydrological and/or plant growth modelling), statistical modelling (e.g. data assimilation and prediction), environmental or agricultural engineering, environmental science or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in statistical and computer programming (e.g. R, Fortran and/or C++) and/or developing high-quality software packages
  • Ability to undertake numerical modelling and data analysis of natural and agricultural systems
  • A publication record in scholarly journals
  • Excellent written and verbal skills with proven ability to produce high-quality scientific publications and presentations
