Job description

Lecturer in Engineering Mathematics – Full time, Permanent

School of Engineering and the Built Environment

The School of Engineering and the Built Environment is delighted to be able to offer a new post in Engineering and/or Applied Mathematics.

Mathematics is one of the principal and distinctive features of the Engineering programmes so a commitment to the vitality of the subject in this area is essential.  In particular, you should have demonstrable expertise in teaching Mathematics via real-world examples and also delivering Mathematics across a broad range of HE levels.

The Role

The successful candidate will be expected to support programmes across our four principal subject group areas: Construction and Surveying; Civil, Transport and Environmental Engineering; Mechanical Engineering and Design; and, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics.

The School is looking to expand its delivery of Mathematics modules on degree courses in other Schools, so a good all-round mathematical knowledge is required, with knowledge of Science, Business or Computing applications of Mathematics particularly desirable.

Research is strongly encouraged, and you will be expected to either continue with an established research topic compatible with the School’s interests or to establish a new project in collaboration with School/University colleagues.

The School’s research priorities are focused around 4 principal themes:

  • Smart Places – designing the next generation of where we live, work and play
  • Health and Wellbeing – using technology to keep us fit, active and independent
  • Sustainability and Resilience – making the best possible use of our natural resources
  • Tools and Methods – developing new approaches to improve engineering including modelling and visualisation

The School is also home to the Transport Research Institute and the Institute for Sustainable Construction.

What we are looking for

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • A background in any area of engineering, mathematics or technology-related disciplines
  • Doctoral level qualification
  • Experience delivering Mathematics across a broad range of HE levels

Desirable attributes

  • A relevant Masters degrees
  • Practical experience in research or industry
