Department Department of Biology – Faculty of Medicine

Deadline 31 Jan 2020

Start date by agreement

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University opened a recruitment for a postdoctoral position at Department of Biology

A fully funded post doc position is available in the Silva´s lab, to clarify how different DNA repair pathways are coordinated to ensure proper DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair during gametogenesis, by employing Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system. We have generated fully functional tagged lines by CRISPR/Cas9 of all known pro-DSB factors in C. elegans, which will be exploited to identify novel factors involved in DSB formation through biochemical approaches.

Meiosis is a specialized cell division mechanism which ensures equal distribution of genetic material in the gametes, allowing perpetuation of species. Key to successful meiotic chromosome segregation dwells in homologous recombination, a DNA repair pathway which produces physical attachments between each chromosome pair (crossovers) that in turn promote faithful segregation. Homologous recombination requires DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) as template for repair, which during meiosis are intentionally induced by topoisomerase II-like SPO-11. Of the total number of DSBs, only a subset will be converted into a crossover, whereas all the remaining ones are channeled into different, crossover-independent, DNA repair pathways.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. holders who have not received the Ph.D. before 1. 1. 2012

  • wilingness to travel and present the research outcomes at international conferrences
