Position Overview

The Postdoctoral Fellow, Estuary Ecology and Technology, will be involved in research projects conducted by JCUs Marine Data Technology Hub. The incumbent will contribute expertise to on-going research projects, particularly in the area of interactions between end-users and technology, and develop their own research that aligns with the Hub’s current research directions. The Postdoctoral Fellow will deliver research outputs including peer-reviewed publications related to the work. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also engage in some academic education, contributing content development, lecturing and course coordination in coastal ecology.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Contribute to current research of JCUs Estuary and Coastal Wetland Ecosystems Research group.
  2. Develop new research directions in the current areas of focus of JCUs Estuary and Coastal Wetland Ecosystems Research group.
  3. Conduct field and laboratory studies as necessary.
  4. Write peer reviewed publications related to the groups research work.
  5. Engage in academic education, contributing content development, lecturing and course coordination in coastal ecology.
  6. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.
  7. Demonstrate a commitment to the University values.

Generic Accountabilities 

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff. 

  1. The Postdoctoral Fellow is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Postdoctoral Fellowis required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.
  3. The Postdoctoral Fellow is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct. 

Special Conditions

  • It is a requirement of this position to hold a current ‘C’ class Queensland driver’s license and boat license.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

Essential

  1. A PhD in an area related to tropical estuary ecology.
  2. Experience in developing frameworks for translating scientific knowledge to address end-user needs.
  3. Experience in developing advanced technological solutions, such as artificial intelligence, to solve applied scientific problems.
  4. Demonstratedhigh-levelwritten,oralandinterpersonalcommunicationskills,andexperienceindevelopinganddeliveringpresentations,proposalsandprojectbriefs.
  5. Demonstrated high levels of skills in univariate and multivariate statistical analysis.
  6. Ability to integrate knowledge and theory across disciplines from social sciences to natural sciences.
  7. Ability to work effectively across a range of developed and developing country settings, in a culturally sensitive manner.

Desirable

  1. Previous field research in tropical estuaries.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and manage relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including academics, education sector managers, teachers and industry partners to achieve objectives.
  3. Experience in curriculum development and assessment, including development of multimedia teaching materials.
