About the opportunity 

The Department of Government and International Relations is seeking to appoint a two-year fixed term education-focused Lecturer (Level B, 1.0 FTE) in politics/political analysis. Applicants with expertise in any area of politics/political analysis are welcome; however, it would be a plus if you have relevant experiences in coordinating large first- and second-year units in politics, political analysis, and popular culture and politics. A Lecturer (EFR) is expected to dedicate the majority of their contribution to education (up to 70% - or 80%).

As the successful applicant you will:

  • engage in high-quality teaching and learning experiences at undergraduate, honours, and postgraduate levels
  • undertake independent teaching in the discipline, area of expertise and/or related area
  • contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs of the department, with a particular focus on politics and political analysis, including policymaking in political context, Australian politics, popular culture and politics
  • supervise honours and postgraduate students.
  • evaluate teaching and learning and apply learnings to improve practice and outcomes in the units coordinated
  • contribute to the design and delivery of multidisciplinary work-integrated learning units and content
  • work collaboratively where coordination of units involves across school/faculty cooperation with professionalism
  • develop and evaluate assessment materials which align with best practice under the supervision of more senior academic staff within the school/faculty

About you

  • a PhD (awarded) in politics, public administration, policy analysis or relevant fields
  • demonstrated teaching ability and experience in politics, public policy, Australian politics, political analysis, popular culture and politics and evidence of teaching effectiveness such as student evaluations
  • the potential to contribute to advanced level interdisciplinary programs
  • demonstrated experience in supervising honours and postgraduate students
  • evidence of contributing to a positive workplace culture in which diversity of thought, contribution, collaboration, excellence and achieving outcomes are valued and enabled
  • demonstrated success in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives in multidisciplinary work-related units such as micro-credential and professional education
  • ability to develop and evaluate assessment materials which align with best practice under the supervision of more senior academic staff within the school/faculty
  • ability to work collaboratively across school/faculty and with industry/public sector

In the most recent national research assessment exercise (Excellence in Research for Australia, 2019), Political Science at the University of Sydney was awarded the highest possible 5 rating, indicating “well above world standard.” The department also has considerable success in attracting external research funding. In addition, we are engaged in a series of interdisciplinary networks and projects, including with the Sydney Policy Lab, the Sydney Environment Institute and the Centre for International Security Studies.
