Often described as small but mighty, La Trobe University’s Mildura campus is embedded within a unique and vibrant regional community in north west Victoria on the banks of the Murray River and on the doorstep to the culturally significant world heritage listed Mungo National Park. This campus, like others in La Trobe’s regional network, aims to provide local students with a high-quality tertiary learning experience as well as being a hub for regional research and community engagement activities.

This position has been established as part of a revitalisation of the Bachelor of Arts offering across our regional campuses. A central component is the ‘Crime, Justice and Legal Studies’ Program which is part of the Department of Social Inquiry in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The program co-delivers the Bachelor of Criminology with the Law School and the ‘Crime, Justice and Legal Studies’ major within the Bachelor of Arts at Mildura.  The program takes a strong interdisciplinary approach to teaching and research about law and law-related issues and has a strong commitment to the achievement of excellence and to social justice.

About the role

You will be responsible for developing and delivering quality education in core and elective subjects within the Bachelor of Arts at Mildura, in particular, the Crime, Justice and Legal Studies and Sociology majors. You will be a key member of the multi-disciplinary Department of Social Inquiry which is based at the Bundoora Campus but also includes staff at other regional campuses. You will deliver high quality learning experiences and play an important role in developing teaching and scholarly engagement with flexible delivery and on-line learning approaches. Furthermore, you will build research collaborations within and beyond the university and pursue external funding opportunities.

Skills & Experience

  • A PhD (awarded or submitted) in a Humanities or Social Sciences discipline or area of study which demonstrates an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human society and aligns with sociology and or socio-legal studies.
  • Demonstrated competence in teaching, coordination and curriculum development and incorporating online and blended approaches.
  • Evidence of high quality and/or high impact research conducted and published or otherwise disseminated, relative to opportunity
  • Experience in supervising, or co-supervise, honours and postgraduate students.

Please refer to the Position Description for other duties, skills and experience required for this position.

All La Trobe University employees are bound by the Working with Children Act 2005. If you are successful, you will be required to hold a valid Victorian Employee Working with Children Check prior to commencement.
