Job Details

Applications are invited for a Research Associate in Data-Driven Design for Advanced Manufacturing at the Imagination Lab in Lancaster University’s Institute for Contemporary Arts.

You will conduct research within the EPSRC funded ‘Chatty Factories’ project (EP/R021031/1), which is a collaboration between Lancaster University, Cardiff, Bath, Nottingham and Edinburgh. The Chatty Factories project investigates novel uses of Internet-of-Things (IoT), robotic fabrication and data-driven technologies to build ‘Factories of the Future’.

The first industrial revolution saw a transformation based on water and steam power. The second harnessed electricity to support mass production. The third used electronics and IT to innovate and automate. Now, the World Economic Forum defines the fourth industrial revolution as "a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres". This builds on the rapid growth of the third revolution to bring data, artificial intelligence and robotic fabrication systems to the forefront of the manufacturing industry.

The role will be dedicated to developing and evaluating new forms of computer-aided-design / generative 3D modelling tools that can leverage streams of IoT data and advanced data analytics to enhance and augment traditional product design cycles.

This is an exciting role that offers significant growth potential for the right candidate.
