Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must possess a PhD in Sociology.

Candidates must also possess related academic and professional experience including:

  • At least 5 years’ teaching and research at the tertiary level in Sociology
  • Previous graduate supervision experience
  • A good publication record

Candidates with the following will have an advantage:

  • An emphasis in Caribbean Sociology
  • Outstanding pedagogical skills
  • Ability to teach sociological theory, research methods and any three (3) of the following areas: Introduction to Sociology, Sociological Theory, Social Structure and Industrial Sociology

The following will be considered assets:

  • Graduate qualifications in Sociology with Caribbean expertise
  • Success in and recognition of professional activities

Special Responsibilities            

  • Teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level
  • Supervising graduate work
  • Teaching five (5) courses per academic year Involvement in University life (administration, conference organization and committees) and community outreach
  • Contributing to curriculum development  

Personal Attributes

The Department places high priority on individuals of integrity who can work well in a team and student friendly environment. Candidates should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of both oral and written English is essential.

Candidates must also:

  • Be able to work collegiately and as a member of a team Be able to seek external research funding
  • Have knowledge of Caribbean Sociology
  • Have the capacity to develop an emerging area within the discipline
  • Have evident effective administrative and organizational skills
  • Be willing to be involved in collaborative research
  • Have a demonstrated capacity to carry out a research agenda
