About the opportunity 

The Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney is internationally recognised for its excellence in research and teaching in all aspect of Greco-Roman antiquity (https://sydney.edu.au/arts/schools/school-of-philosophical-and-historical-inquiry/department-of-classics-and-ancient-history.html ). It collaborates closely with members of the sister Departments of Archaeology and Philosophy whose expertise lies in the ancient world.

Applications are invited for a position at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in the Department of Classics and Ancient History. The Department is seeking an applicant with an outstanding research profile in Ancient Greek language, literature and culture. They will be expected to teach or co-teach undergraduate units of study at all levels of the Ancient Greek Major, and to contribute from time to time to the Ancient History Major, notably in cultural units such as the popular Classical Myth. If appointed at the level of Senior Lecturer, they will have a track record in high-quality publications and evidence of an ability to attract competitive external research funding.

At both levels the candidate will be willing to contribute to interdisciplinary teaching and learning as well as to supervise Honours and postgraduate students on a range of topics of departmental interest and need.

If appointed at the level of Senior Lecturer, they will have experience in interdisciplinary teaching and learning and be willing to undertake it on behalf of the Department and, where appropriate, the School and Faculty. They will work with industry, community and government organisations to create learning experiences that guide students to apply their expertise within the context of the interdisciplinary and project-based units of Sydney University’s new Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies. They will also have demonstrated excellence in pedagogical practice and design that balance depth of disciplinary expertise with the broader capabilities of cultural competence, interdisciplinary effectiveness, and complex problem solving.

In addition, they will be expected to pursue an active research program that can attract external competitive funding; to participate fully in the Department’s research culture; and to undertake appropriate administrative roles and curriculum development as required.

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer (equivalent to a U.S. Assistant Professor). The appointee will be expected to:

• design and deliver high-quality undergraduate teaching programs in Ancient Greek (all levels)
• contribute to undergraduate teaching programs in Ancient History and Latin as needed
• supervise Honours, Doctoral and other postgraduate research in their specialist field 

• publish their research in well-regarded peer-reviewed international publications 

• seek research funding from internal and external sources 

• contribute to academic administration. 


The post may be filled, if appropriate, at Senior Lecturer (equivalent to a U.S. Associate Professor). The appointee will be expected to:

• design and deliver high-quality undergraduate teaching programs in Ancient Greek (all levels)
• contribute as appropriate to undergraduate teaching programs in Ancient History and Latin as needed
• supervise Honours, Doctoral and other postgraduate research in their specialist field 

• contribute to interdisciplinary teaching and learning that extends to work with industry, community and government organisations to create learning experiences that guide students to apply their expertise within the context of interdisciplinary and project-based learning
• publish their research in well-regarded peer-reviewed international publications 

• seek research funding from internal and external sources 

• contribute to academic administration within the department and school. 


About you

• a PhD in any area of Ancient Greek language, literature and culture
• experience as a skilled teacher of Ancient Greek at the tertiary level 

• demonstrated research expertise in Ancient Greek language, literature and culture through high-quality publications. 

• evidence of capacity for high-quality teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level in both large and small units.
• capacity to supervise Honours and postgraduate students across a wide range of subjects pertaining to Classical antiquity
• capacity to teach in interdisciplinary and project-based contexts
• capacity to contribute to curricular development
• capacity to teach in a range of areas including Ancient Greek, Latin and Ancient History
• an active research program with significant potential for future publication and impact
• evidence of successful teamwork and a collegial approach.
