Overview:

William Harvey Research Institute
Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Cell Biology

Applications are sought for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the group of Professor Paul Chapple in the Centre for Endocrinology at the William Harvey Research Institute, within the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London. http://www.whri.qmul.ac.uk/staff-all/staff-research/176-chapple-paul.

The successful applicant will work on a project that aims to understand the cellular role of the neurodegeneration linked protein sacsin. Previous research from the Chapple group, and others, has shown that sacsin has functional domains that link it to the cells molecular chaperone and protein quality control systems. Sacsin is important for normal cellular architecture, with its loss impacting on the intermediate filament cytoskeleton and mitochondrial function. This project will explore how these different aspects of sacsin’s biology link together to give insights into the diverse cellular roles of molecular chaperones. It will also increase our understanding of the molecular pathogenic mechanism of ARSACS, the neuronal disease caused by mutations in sacsin.

Essential requirements for this post include a PhD in a relevant biological or biochemical subject, significant research experience in molecular and cell biology techniques and an appropriate publication record. Experience of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, proximity labelling methods for protein interactions and iPSC technologies would also be advantageous. An ability to communicate well, work within a highly interdisciplinary team and maintain good laboratory records are also essential.

The post is a full time fixed-term position for one year. Starting salary will be in the range (£34,220 - £38,084) per annum inclusive of London Allowance with yearly increments. Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, plus 4 College closure days, flexible working hours, pension scheme and an interest free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006.

Informal enquiries about this post can be made to Professor Paul Chapple by email to j.p.chapple@qmul.ac.uk
