College of Medical and Dental Sciences

Full time starting salary is normally in the range of £41,526 to £49,553. With potential progression once in post to £55,750

Research that takes place at Birmingham impacts on the lives of people regionally, nationally and globally. Our academic experts continue to break new ground to address the key challenges facing the world today. To build on and share our success we are looking to recruit up to 15 Birmingham Fellows across the breadth of our academic disciplines. We particularly welcome applications from individuals who will:

  • Be able to take advantage of the high-end facilities, centres and infrastructure in which the University (and external funders) have invested in substantially - see list below
  • Contribute to the building of critical mass in key research areas for the University including the development of multidisciplinary capabilities, especially where this is combined with the point above
  • Demonstrate the ability (or the strong potential) to draw in significant levels of research funding – those who can draw on major funds such as the ISCF or GCRF are particularly welcomed, as are individuals who would bring major research grants with them, including fully funded external fellowships with at least two more years to run
  • Contribute strong publications or other outputs that are enterable for the REF 2021

Applications will be particularly welcomed in the following areas (applicants not in these areas will need to demonstrate how they fit the criteria above).

  • Quantum Technologies
  • Data Science and AI (particularly computer science and health data)
  • Robotics and autonomous vehicles
  • Manufacturing engineering
  • Energy systems and Thermal Energy technologies
  • Healthcare technologies
  • Structural biology (with link to high-field NMR preferably)
  • Sustainable Materials (Critical materials, recycling and the circular economy, battery technologies, recyclable plastics)
  • Lead themes of the IGI (e.g., gender, transnational crime, resilient cities, water sciences)
  • Responsible Business

Our sector-leading Birmingham Fellowship programme offers five years of protected time for high-quality research – ie. with a relatively low requirement for teaching and administration in that period - allowing outstanding, high potential, early-career researchers of all ages to establish themselves as rounded academics who will go on to excel in their academic discipline across research, teaching and wider citizenship. All Fellowships come with a permanent academic post at the University at the end of the 5 year period.

Successful candidates will need to have a PhD in their relevant academic discipline and be able to demonstrate that they have the capability of delivering world-class or internationally leading research.
