About the opportunity 

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work as part of a collaborative research team including the University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, Australian Synchrotron (ANSTO), Monash Health and BreastScreen Victoria. The successful applicant will be primarily based in the Discipline of Medical Imaging Science at the University of Sydney working with Professor Patrick Brennan, Associate Professor Sarah Lewis and Dr Amir Tavakoli Taba.

The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate strong leadership, commitment and initiative as well as excellent writing, computing and analytical skills. You must have a strong knowledge of medical imaging acquisition and instrumentation and the ability to explore the radiologists’ visual with the PCT images, establishing performance levels and other implications of this novel technology. Other essential criteria include the capacity to successfully meet deadlines and work effectively as part of a collaborative team.

In this role you will:

  • design and facilitate research studies focusing on image optimisation, image quality assessment and clinical evaluation of phase-contrast computed tomography (PCT) images
  • coordinate research activities with researchers at the University of Melbourne and Australian Synchrotron (ANSTO) in constructing image testing sets and conducting parallel data analysis
  • provide operational support in conducting the world first clinical trial of breast PCT in 2020, including solving biomedical engineering problems
  • participate in fortnightly chief investigator meetings (Sydney) and quarterly all-day meetings of the whole team (Melbourne)
  • assist with the submission of new research funding grants
  • present the outcomes of this work at national and international conferences and prepare manuscripts for publication in relevant quality journals

  • relevant tertiary qualifications, including a PhD in a relevant area such as diagnostic radiography, physics, engineering or computer science (PhD students who have submitted their thesis are welcome to apply)
  • experience in quantitative data analysis methods, especially related to medical imaging
  • an understanding of radiological assessment techniques
  • experience in digital image processing
  • excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective collaborative working relationships
  • excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
  • demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships
