About us

Curtin University Sustainability Policy (CUSP) is a research and innovation based institute in the School of Design and the Built Environment (DBE) and within the Faculty of Humanities. CUSP has twelve research staff and is a dynamic interdisciplinary group. We carry out research with the ARC, ARENA, CRCs, Climate-KIC Australia, SBEnrc and through projects with society and industry. We publish our research in peer-reviewed journals. CUSP is the driving force behind the new Masters of Environment and Climate Emergency within DBE.

Your new role

We have an exciting opportunity for an outstanding researcher to join the CUSP team and lead research in one of two areas:

  • Digital Services and the Urban Environment – The emergence of digital services in cities is a key innovation enabling the delivery of energy, water and resource systems in our cities. You will be able to demonstrate competence in computation and digital technology with applications in sustainability.

OR

  • People, Planet and the Urban Environment – The design and planning of sustainable cities is dependent on a deeper understanding of the constraints imposed by the relationships between people and our planetary boundaries. You will be able to demonstrate interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research outputs.

As part of this role, you will also be required to participate in some teaching activities, making a significant contribution to courses in Environment and Climate Emergency, which includes a new Masters program. This role will also assist the Director, CUSP, with the day to day operations of the institute, providing leadership, guidance and mentorship to fellow employees. This is an excellent opportunity for an innovative Academic who is wanting to take the next step in their working career.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering high quality and innovative teaching to undergraduate, honors and postgraduate students across a range of modes and levels.
  • Contributing to the leadership of the institute.
  • Working towards international recognition and disseminating research findings through seminars, workshops and conferences.
  • Publishing in high quality refereed journals.
  • Undertaking principal supervision of research honors, research masters, and research doctoral students, as well as supervision of honors or postgraduate students engaged in coursework.

You will bring to the role

  • A doctoral qualification in relevant discipline.
  • Proven high level teaching skills with a demonstrated reflective approach to teaching.
  • A significant contribution to scholarship in teaching and experience in curriculum development and unit/course coordination.
  • An established record of research outputs/creative works in high quality refereed academic journals/outlets consistent with the discipline.
  • Evidence of an established national reputation and growing international profile and a record of obtaining research income, including nationally competitive research grants and/or fellowships.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to lead major curriculum and/or research initiatives, provide mentoring to less experienced staff and supervise HDR students.
  • Demonstrated high level communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to foster the development of a collegial and supportive working environment and the ability to interact with students and staff with cross cultural sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to applying relevant and applicable policies, procedures and legislation in the day-to-day performance of the functions of this position.

What we offer you

  • Agile and flexible working environment with great work life balance
