The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering provides competence and technological solutions within the areas of civil and transportation engineering, structural engineering, water and wastewater engineering, and hydraulic engineering. Students and researchers graduating from our programs provide our partners with sustainable and competitive expertise, for application in both the public and private sectors.

The research group of Road, Transport and Geomatics is recruiting a postdoc within transportation engineering.

We have a vacancy for a 100% position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Transportation Engineering at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (IV). The position is affiliated with the Transport Group. The position requires training and expertise in transportation engineering, operation research, computer science, or statistics.

The Head of Department is Professor Vikas Thakur. 

The Postdoctoral position has a duration of two years (From June 2020 to May 2022).

This postdoctoral fellowship is financed by “Sustainable mixed urban transit system with electric and conventional buses” (SMUrTS). SMUrTS is a research collaboration between Norway, Sweden, and China with support from the RCN, SEA, and NSFC. Through a common effort, SMUrTS contributes to the solutions for sustainable urban transit system with electric and conventional buses. SMUrTS is hosted by NTNU and BJTU.

The position reports to Dr. Chaoru Lu

Main duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to work closely with Associate Professor Trude Tørset and Dr. Chaoru Lu of the department, to:

  • Conduct research activities in the domain of electric vehicles (EV) operations and infrastructure planning. This includes EV users’ charging choice, EV traffic operations, charging station planning and operations, operations of e-taxis and e-buses, and related topics
  • Actively assist in proposal writings
  • Publish scholarly papers in top-tier journals in the transportation field

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral fellow:

A postdoctoral research fellowships is a qualification position in which the main objective is qualification for work in academic positions. Completion of a Norwegian doctoral degree or corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in transportation engineering, operation research, applied math, computer science, electrical engineering, econometrics, data science or other relevant topics is required.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

NTNU is committed to following evaluation criteria for research quality according to The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment - DORA.

We are looking for a person who enjoys writing and has experience from scientific publishing. Programming, language and statistics skills will strengthen the application.

The successful candidate should have ability of conducting high quality research and publishing research findings in top-tier journals in at least one of the areas in: 

  • transportation modelling;
  • electric vehicle energy consumption modelling;
  • Life-cycle cost-benefit analysis;
  • Battery management system;
  • infrastructure planning;
  • traffic operations and traffic flow theory;
  • public transportation systems; and
  • data analytics

In addition to doing research, the postdoc is expected to contribute in teaching, supervising master students and PhDs.

Other qualifications:

  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal, academic writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Good understanding of traffic engineering.
  • Good understanding of public transportation modelling and planning.
  • Strong research background within at least one of the aforementioned fields.
  • Evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken.
  • Strong programming and modelling skills.

The successful candidate should be capable of:

  • Working independently, and with a problem solving mindset.
  • Learning and working in teams in a structured manner, and able and willing to take initiatives for personal and team growth.
  • Enjoy interdisciplinary research.

Salary and conditions

Postdoc:

Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 523 200 before tax per year. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
