Durham’s academics are shaping the future with world-leading research across all faculties, and its distinctive approach to research-led teaching ensures that programmes are cutting-edge and intellectually stimulating for its 18,000 students. The School of Government and International Affairs (SGIA) is ranked in the top 100 departments in the world (QS) and is undergoing a period of sustained growth as part of Durham University’s strategy 2017-2027. Substantial academic staffing growth linked to expansion in undergraduate and postgraduate numbers means that the post holder has the opportunity to make an important difference to SGIA’s and the University’s future.

It is during this exciting time of growth that the University seeks to appoint a talented and ambitious Professor as Head of School. Reporting to the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health, the appointee will take strategic lead and management in the School. The successful candidate will engender within the School the vision of the University for excellence in research, student education and the student experience and externally to continue to build the reputation of the School. She/he will also be expected to demonstrate world-leading and world-changing research with outputs consistently recognised as internationally excellent in their field of Politics, and also be able to evidence excellence in the development and delivery of teaching and the promotion of student experience.
