About the position

We invite applications for a vacant position as Associate Professor in History of Religions at The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies starting August 1st 2020 at the latest. The position consists of equal parts research and teaching, along with the necessary administrative duties.

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies is part of the Faculty of Humanities at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), which is located at the Dragvoll campus in Trondheim. The department consists of two sections: Philosophy, and History of Religions

History of Religions offers teaching up to PhD-level. The department currently employs 31 permanent, full-time academic staff and 14 research fellows. The department is currently focusing on improving the gender balance at the work place. 

The History of Religions section currently employs four permanent, full-time academic staff, two PhD research fellows, and three temporary academic staff.

The History of Religions section offers PhD, MA, and BA level instruction. The faculty offers an active and international research environment.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Teaching, advising, and grading broadly in the History of Religions at all levels
  • Teaching in Christianity, including its historical and contemporary context at the basic (BA) level
  • Research and publishing in recognized scientific media
  • Development and implementation of research projects
  • Administrative work following approved regulations

The position requires research, dissemination and teaching competence in History of Religions (“Religionswissenschaft”)

The applicant must implement his or her teaching in accordance with the approved curriculum, in addition to working to further develop the subject area and the teaching program.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must have

  • A PhD in History of Religions or equivalent
  • Solid, documented expertise in History of Religions research
  • Teaching experience relevant to History of Religions
  • A research plan that shows a clear progression

Applicants should have

  • Experience with various methods
  • Documented pedagogical skills and a clear teaching statement
  • Further positive evaluation will be given to applicants with
  • Supervision experience with students from all education levels
  • Relevant administrative experience
  • Good skills in a Nordic language
  • Documented ability to obtain externally funded research projects

When evaluating the applications, emphasis will be placed on

  • Relevance and quality of research, with more weight on research and publishing activity within the last 5 years (periods of official leave may be deducted)
  • Pedagogical abilities and qualifications, based on documented pedagogical material, academic work, teaching experience, PhD and MA degree supervision, and pedagogical background

The applicant’s personal suitability and motivation for the position will be given decisive weight.

Applicants should have good collaborative skills, enthusiasm for teaching and active student learning, and ability and interest in popular scientific dissemination.

General requirements

Basic qualifications in the discipline of education are required. Anyone who is appointed without having formal basic qualifications in the discipline of education (formerly referred to as practical qualifications in teaching at university level) and who is unable to document equivalent qualifications is required to an approved pedagogical development programme. Uniped at NTNU offers qualifying courses.

Pedagogical skills and qualifications will be emphasized. The evaluation will be based on documented material related to teaching, forms of presentation for the academic works, experience in teaching, supervision of doctoral and master’s degree subjects as well as other types of pedagogical background. Applicants with teaching experience at university level will be preferred. Quality and breadth will be evaluated.

It is a prerequisite that within three years of appointment new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language can demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three in the course in Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

After the application deadline, an internal sorting committee will initially evaluate the applications. The best qualified candidates will then be recommended for further evaluation by an expert committee. Everyone who has applied will be told whether they are moving on or not in the application process.

Candidates who are recommended to the expert committee will be asked to submit their diplomas, certificates and up to five scientific papers.

In the final stage, the top candidates will be invited to an interview and trial lecture.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Associate Professor code 1011 is normally from NOK 563 700,- - 667 200,- - before tax per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The person appointed must live in a location enabling him/her to be present at and available to the institution.
