George Kingsley Roth Research Fellowship (stipendiary)

Christ's College invites applications for a George Kingsley Roth Research Fellowship. The post is tenable for four years from no later than 1^st October 2020 and is not renewable.  The Fellowship is offered in research areas relating to the anthropology, ethnology, history or contemporary issues (eg economics, sociology or politics) of countries within the South Asian, East Asian or Pacific Basin regions: 

• In “East Asia”:  China, Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea and Taiwan.
• In “South Asia”:  Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka.
• In the “Pacific Basin”:  all islands in the Pacific Ocean e.g. Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, Marshall Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau plus
• The following Pacific Rim countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Timor-Leste and Brunei.

The anticipation is that this work will help to promote a deeper understanding of these particular regions of the world.  (For the avoidance of doubt, the following countries are not included: North, Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand and Russia.)

The Fellowship is intended for researchers comparatively early on in their careers and offers an opportunity to carry out novel research in a stimulating academic environment. Candidates should not normally have held a stipendiary Research Fellowship at another Oxford or Cambridge College and the successful candidate is expected to be either a graduate student, probably in the latter stages of their research leading to a PhD Degree (or equivalent), or a postdoctoral researcher who has completed their PhD Degree after 1 January 2019.

In addition to pursuing research, it is expected that the Fellow will take a full part in College life and activities. Where appropriate they are encouraged to undertake some undergraduate teaching during Term, for which payment will be made at normal supervision rates. The stipend is paid at point 32 on the University single salary spine for candidates with a PhD (currently £25,217)  or point 25  for candidates without a PhD (currently £20,675), provided that the Fellow is not paid from elsewhere (other than remuneration for up to six hours College or University teaching a week). The stipend for a Fellow who has additional emoluments (other than as described) will be reduced by the total amount of pay received. Fellows living out of College receive a living-out allowance of £4,574 (with a PhD) or £2,093 (without a PhD).
