About the opportunity 

The role of Data Scientist at the Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH) is to support translational data science across all faculties of the university through a professional consulting service model of project delivery. This role will apply, advise in the use of, develop and implement data science algorithms and statistical methods, software tools and data systems to support research opportunities across research areas such as science, engineering, health and business. Three Data Scientist positions are available at HEO Level 7: a full-time 3-year position, a 50% FTE part-time 3-year position, and a full-time 1-year position.

About you

  • Tertiary education in in a computational area of study (computer science, computational statistics, engineering, physics, biology, for example) preferably to postgraduate level
  • A strong understanding of modern data analytics and data science methods and tools
  • A working knowledge of modern data-centric programming languages including one of Python and/or R
  • Experience in the application of data science, statistical modelling and machine learning technologies to a variety of complex problems and data sets
  • Experience in eliciting user requirements through consultation and problem solving, to design solutions that meet time constraints
  • Knowledge of appropriate data management and version control tools such as git
  • Experience in planning and developing complex data processing pipelines, working with a variety of data sources and destinations, ranging from file systems to enterprise data systems
  • Good entrepreneurial spirit, showing a willingness and enthusiasm to take SIH results to a wider community
