This pivotal position is located within the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation (ADI), based in the Faculty of Arts & Education at Deakin University. ADI is one of Australia’s leading facilities for cross-disciplinary research in the humanities and social sciences.

The primary purpose of the Project Officer, Research, is to play a key role in the execution of our research strategy. You will support the submission of grant and tender proposals by leading academic researchers. The position will also support ongoing projects by providing a range of financial, human resources and contract management services.

This position works closely on a day-to-day basis with Deakin Research staff, the University Solicitor’s Office, Faculty administrative teams, and external partners in relation to all aspects of University policy and procedures for the administration of grants and other research funding. You will liaise with representatives from other universities and organisations in relation to research and partnerships and will represent the University from time to time as required.

Your key responsibilities will include;

  • Providing high quality financial, human resources and contract support in the development and management of research projects.
  • Creating and maintaining databases with accurate information on research activities, extracting and analysing information in these databases and taking appropriate actions.
  • Providing high-quality advice to staff on general research contract issues and University policy and procedures including critically analysing and reviewing contracts and agreements associated with externally funded research projects to ensure that the terms, conditions and research parameters are acceptable to the researchers and the University.
  • Identify, develop and deliver workshops aimed at enhancing the staff capability in the preparation of applications for grants, including funding rules/eligibility and the preparation of detailed project budgets in collaboration with the ADI Deputy Director (Research).
  • Working collaboratively with ADI academic and professional colleagues, Deakin Research, Advancement staff and other university representatives to cultivate and solicit research partners for Institute-wide priorities.

To be successful, you’ll have;

  • An accounting, finance or business qualification plus relevant experience in project management or research administration.
  • Research training such as an honour’s, master’s or doctoral degree will be considered favourably.
  • Experience in the preparation or assessment of grant applications, including project budgets.
  • Experience with the interpretation of policies and procedures and providing advice to clients.
  • Experience in research management will be favourably considered.
