About the opportunity
Reporting to, Head of the Bionics Laboratory (Prof Gregg Suaning), the National Health and Medical Research Council funded research positions participate in the research operations aimed at the clinical application of an implantable medical device for the restoration of vision to the blind – a bionic eye.

- experience in manufacture of complex systems, application of laser technologies for microfabrication. Flexibility and interest in developing new skills in the domain of medical devices fabrication
- demonstrated expertise in biomedical engineering or related field, ideally in implantable medical devices
- familiar with the principles of quality management practices and their application to medical devices (particularly of ISO13485). Experienced in the processes of iterative prototyping and manufacturing devices for field applications
- excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to engage in independent consultation with a range of staff in a complex organisation and, as appropriate, with external parties
- excellent interpersonal, relationship building and influencing skills with the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders in a friendly, upbeat fashion
- analytical skills and the ability to bring multiple perspectives to problem solving
- capacity to work within a quality management system and convey the importance of compliance to others both verbally and by way of example
- tertiary qualifications and/or appropriate biomedical or relevant experience in related field
- experience in developing and working on research projects, including expertise in using research protocols, experimental design, ethics submissions and grant applications
Funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council, these positions participate in the research operations aimed at the clinical application of an implantable medical device for the restoration of vision to the blind – a bionic eye. The successful candidate will be responsible for the commissioning, testing and operation of a fabrication facility to produce fully functional, clinic-ready implants, within the highly regulated field of medical devices (compliant with ISO13485 and other relevant standards). The successful applicant will be a key member of an established research team comprising students, clinicians and biomedical engineers. The primary objective is to manufacture prototype devices for a small-scale clinical trial that are suitable for long-term human implantation and meet functional, ethical and regulatory requirements.
