Position Overview

The Manager, Research Data Services works with the Director, eResearch Centre and collaborates with relevant units within James Cook University (JCU) to design, manage and deliver industry leading research data management services. The strategic direction of the eResearch Centre is to have a research data management environment that provides an easy to operate, fit for purpose and engaging research data management system capable of both satisfying researchers and the demands of funding bodies as well as best exposing and unlocking the value of the Universities research holdings. The incumbent participates in all aspects of research data management including development of policy, compliance, strategy and implementation.

Division of Research and Innovation

The Division of Research and Innovation plays a pivotal role in the University by developing and implementing research policy, identifying and fostering research strength, and promoting and coordinating collaboration with governments, industry, publicly funded research agencies and other universities. The Division is comprised of: Policy and Projects, Research Infrastructure Directorate, Research Services, Graduate Research School, the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and The Cairns Institute.

Research Infrastructure Directorate

The Research Infrastructure Directorate enables and engages in high quality research by providing research facilities and expertise to JCU and external researchers. The Research Infrastructure Facilities: eResearch Centre Advanced Analytical Centre, Orpheus Island Research Station, Daintree Rainforest Observatory, Fletcherview Research Station, Marine and Aquaculture Research Facility and Operations; facilitate research, providing a support framework, expert discipline and technical knowledge, experimental and instrumental capabilities, data capture, management and analytics and play a role in education and engagement.

Principal Accountabilities

  1. Fostering a culture of research data management within JCU including building awareness of the opportunities presented to researchers engaged in high quality research data management practice .
  2. Project manage the design and implementation of high quality, responsive and innovative research data management environments to support the JCU research community in consultation with the Director, eResearch Centre.
  3. Develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify strategic opportunities and new service offerings including  ethical use of research data at JCU.
  4. Work collaboratively with the relevant services teams within JCU to coordinate research data management activities and services by proactively engaging across administrative boundaries of the University.
  5. Assist researchers in the technical elements of data storage and curation of research data as well as forecasting growth in big data collections. This will involve liaising with the relevant internal JCU stakeholders, including Technology Solutions Directorate and Library Research Services. 
  6. Develop and implement advocacy and training resources for data management and open access dissemination of research for academics, HDR students and research support staff, in conjunction with the eResearch Centre, Graduate Research Schoo and LIS staff, to facilitate compliance with research data management best practice standards. 
  7. Liaise with other Universities and eResearch organisations (nationally and internationally) to develop and broker access to research data management tools and services by proactively engaging and networking to introduce both cutting edge and best of breed services and practices to JCU.
  8. Coordinate and/or contribute to developing funding proposals and government submissions related to the storage, management and presentation of research data.
  9. Participate in stakeholder engagement programs and represent JCU as a professional by maintaining industry leading knowledge and being actively involved in the relevant professional networks.

Generic Accountabilities

  1. The Manager, Research Data Services is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies and decisions of the University Council, understand and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.
  2. The Manager, Research Data Services is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. 
  3. The Manager, Research Data Services is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Special Conditions

  • It is a requirement of this position to be able to travel between JCU campuses for short periods. 
  • It is a requirement of this position to occasionally travel interstate as required.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.


  1. Progress towards postgraduate qualification in either Information Technology, Information management or related disciplines and relevant experience in eResearch Services or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education and/or training.
  2. Proven ability in research data management, access and movement technologies, techniques and standards with proven ability to deploy a range of data-related software technologies across diverse operating environments and storage technologies.
  3. Demonstrated high level written and oral communication, interpersonal and influencing skills with a variety of stakeholders at different levels and a track record of delivering high levels of customer satisfaction.
  4. Demonstrated experience in developing and presenting training, including high quality documentation and visual delivery aids.
  5. Demonstrated experience in project management (particularly agile methodologies).
