The Health Physics program in Stanford University's Department of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking a Health Physicist I to support the radiation safety program at Stanford University, Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC), Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital (LPCH), and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), including the microsphere cancer and iodine therapy procedures. The program is also seeking someone who has experience in Laser Safety, specifically the ANSI standard. This position will perform laser safety audits, review Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), evaluate laser registrations, PPE and explore Laser Safety Program improvements.

JOB PURPOSE:
Work under general supervision to administer and implement technical and operational functions of radiation safety programs to meet safety requirements and provide protection against exposure. Perform program management duties focused on routine research/medical facilities inspections, data gathering, establishing control measures, and ensuring compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

CORE DUTIES:

• Review, audit, and oversee the use of radioactive material, level of exposure, and safety requirements in research laboratories, medical institutions, and/or other operational environments by: evaluating and investigating radioactive machines for usage; and safety level; supervising receipt and disposal of radioactive materials; calibrating radiation producing and detecting equipment and helping minimize radiation exposure; Performing periodic safety and instrumentation inspections, contamination and radiation surveys; and ensuring work is performed in compliance.
• Revise and contribute to the development of safety policies/procedures; document radiological protection measures, and submission to radiation protection manager.
• May provide training and coaching to health physicist technicians and other workers.

ADDITIONAL CORE JOB DUTIES:

• Audit, inspect and advise the radiation safety programs at Stanford, SHC, LPCH and VAPAHCS. Assist the Senior Health Physicist in the oversight of the radiation safety program in these areas by investigating and reporting on incidents and reviewing routine operations of the facilities.
• Oversee the Non-ionizing Radiation (NIR) Safety Program. Provide guidance for the safe use of NIR sources by all personnel who can be impacted by them on campus; this includes faculty, staff, students, visitors, and the general public. Consult with NIR users regarding source-appropriate safety principles. Surveys NIR operations/installations when indicated.
• Provide support for radioisotope cancer therapies.
• Provide training to staff, researchers, graduate students, or others utilizing or working with radiation related machines/work areas.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in health physics, radiation physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or related field. Three years of applicable experience in health physics and program management performing duties similar to those listed above.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrated experience implementing and administering radiation safety programs.
• Demonstrated ability to review and evaluate usage and safety level of radioactive material and machines.
• Demonstrated ability calibrating radiation-producing and detecting equipment and performing safety inspections.
• In-depth knowledge of radiation protection regulations at federal, state, and local levels.
• Demonstrated experience in the design of radiation shielding, safety devices, and radiation machines.
• Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences and to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• May be exposed to radioactive materials and/or ionizing radiation, Class IIIB or IV lasers, magnetic or electromagnetic fields, and lead.
• May be exposed to biohazards (urine, blood, feces) while working with patients and/or animals in ER's, OR's or IR's (interventional radiology). Must gown up for sterile environments.
