International Development is part of the Department of Social Sciences, which has grown in recent years and currently has almost 60 academic staff, across four disciplines: International Relations and Politics, Criminology, Sociology and International Development. Across the Department we have just over 1,000 students.

The Centre for International Development at Northumbria is a thriving academic unit committed to research and teaching that contributes to addressing the challenges of global poverty and inequality. Staff are drawn from the across the University and have attracted growing research income in recent years, including GCRF, Newton Fund, Leverhulme, British Academy and NERC, as well as global development organisations. The Centre hosts a successful MSc International Development and is developing plans for a suite of further postgraduate and undergraduate provision in the area. The Centre has seen significant University investment in recent years, currently hosting four university funded post-doctoral research fellows from disciplines including design, urban studies, development geography, history and politics.

The University is seeking to support its strength in Social Sciences with the appointment of a Professor / Associate Professor in International Development. We invite applications from outstanding academics from across the social sciences, and would particularly welcome applications from candidates undertaking work that is ODA compliant.

As a senior Academic colleague, you will assist the Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor to maintain, enhance and improve the University’s national and international reputation in your academic field. You must demonstrate continuing academic attainment and achievement and provide academic leadership (of your subject and associated colleagues), through active contribution to your discipline and tot he life and work of the Faculty and the wider University. This will include contributing to significant change within the discipline, profession and / or community at regional, national and international level.

To be successful in this role you will have externally recognised research outputs of a quality that are internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour, and demonstrable success in securing research funding.  You should also demonstrate academic leadership experience and strong standing with external bodies and networks in your field.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose research has had a demonstrable impact or has significant potential for impact, and who have experience of working in and managing interdisciplinary teams.
