ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF COLLECTIONS, MIT Libraries, to join the Libraries’ senior leadership team, providing strategic leadership for general and distinctive collections in support of MIT’s local and global mission.  Will lead a staff of approximately sixty-five and be responsible for the following areas: Scholarly Communications and Collections Strategy, Department of Distinctive Collections, and Acquisitions and Appraisal.  Will drive the strategic priorities of providing leadership, relationship building, and inspiration with a particular focus on advancing openness and equity in scholarly communications, expanding collective collections building, and supporting new computational uses for collections. Will also work across MIT to advance the Open Access Task Force’s recommendations to provide services for computational access to collections; work towards the vision of scalable and standards-based approaches to metadata creation and management; and focus the Libraries’ curatorial efforts on collecting and making available content generated at MIT and its collections as called for in the Future of Libraries Report.  Will report to the director of the Libraries.  

Job Requirements

REQUIRED:  at least seven years’ increasingly responsible management and supervisory experience; advanced academic degree in relevant field; experience in a research library/cultural heritage institution and collection development and management; thorough understanding of issues facing research libraries, especially the changing landscape of scholarly communication; knowledge of best practices and current trends in digital and physical resource management and operations, copyright and intellectual property issues, archives, rare books, special collections, records management theory and practice, and preservation and digital content management; ability to translate strategies into actionable plans; commitment to collegiality, collaboration, mutual respect, and inclusiveness; and  organizational, administrative, supervisory, strategic planning, and budget management skills.  Job #18050-13
