DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED BIOLOGY AND CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY

The Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology is a multi-disciplinary department in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University with diversified specialties in biology, biotechnology, chemistry, biochemistry, nutrition and food science.  The Department’s research focus is in the interdisciplinary areas of chemistry, biology, nutrition and food science.  

To underpin one of PolyU’s top strategic research foci of Food Safety and Technology,   the Department offers the only undergraduate programme in Food Safety and Technology in Hong Kong, which meets the international standard of Institute of Food Technologists and International Union of Food Science and Technology.  The Department has also established the first university-based Food Safety and Technology Research Centre (FSTRC) in Hong Kong since 2011.  FSTRC aims to become a world-class food safety and food technology authority offering one-stop services to stakeholders to safeguard public health.

Assistant Professor in Food Safety and Technology (Human Nutrition) (Ref. 19093008)

The appointee will be required to (a) conduct lectures, practical sessions and tutorials at taught master’s and undergraduate levels in Nutrition, Food Safety, Biotechnology, Pharmacology, Microbiology (non-clinical), and/or related disciplines; (b) supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students; (c) establish a vigorous independent research programme at the cutting edge of nutrition, metabolism, impacts on health and disease involving human and/or clinical studies, animal models of human disease, and incorporate genetic biochemical, physiological and metabolic approaches in addressing nutrition-related research issues; (d) actively participate in and support the development of FSTRC; and (e) contribute to departmental and programme administration, curriculum development as well as professional service activities in local, national and international organizations.

Applicants should (a) have a PhD degree in the field of Nutrition, Nutritional Sciences, Food Safety and Technology, Immunology, Microbiology, or related disciplines; (b) have solid and relevant post-qualification experience in teaching and research; (c) have an excellent publication record in peer-reviewed international journals especially in nutrition or related disciplines; (d) have related research experience in nutrigenomics, proteomics, metabolomics, obesity and metabolic syndrome, metabolic disorders, microbiome interactions, gastrointestinal function and/or translational medicine in prevention of chronic diseases; (e) have an established track record in obtaining external funding/research grants; and (f) be able to demonstrate evidence of effective classroom teaching.

Preference will be given to candidates with an undergraduate degree in Food and Nutrition or related disciplines.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service
