Chief Residents and Senior Residents play a key role in supporting the experience of students across the residences at the University of Bristol (see www.bristol.ac.uk/students/wellbeing).  Chief Resident and Senior Resident are live-in, salaried positions, commencing in September 2019. As a Chief or Senior Resident, you will take an active role in supporting events and community-wide campaigns in your residence in collaboration with student representatives. You will also provide peer support to residents through one-to-one conversations, group meetings and reception work in the Student Support Centres, signposting any concerns to more senior members of the Residential Life team. Chief Residents will also help to coordinate the activities of their team of Senior Residents, liaising closely with Residential Life Advisors and the Residential Life management team. Chief Residents are paid for 15 hours’ work a week and Senior Residents for 12 hours’ work a week. This includes one fixed weekday shift and one cyclical weekend shift, plus some time for meetings, events and spontaneous student interactions. Successful candidates will be guaranteed a place in University-allocated accommodation (either catered or self-catered) and will be required to pay the accommodation fee for the residence to which they are allocated. They will work a designated shift pattern associated with their residence. Senior and Chief Residents will receive initial training prior to the start of the academic year, which will be refreshed throughout their time in the role.

Chief and Senior Resident must be registered as student at the University of Bristol for the duration of their role and to live in University-allocated accommodation. We have a limited number of rooms suitable for couples. Applicants will be considered for both the Chief and the Senior Resident role unless they specify otherwise in their cover letter. Please note that we are recruiting for a pool of potential candidates to fill roles as they become vacant throughout the year. Some roles will be available from September 2019. Candidates who are successful may be asked to attend training even though there may not be a vacancy immediately available. As roles become available, we will contact pooled candidates to make an offer. Only candidates who have attended the training will be held in the pool. Training and induction are scheduled for the 2-20 September 2019 and you must be available throughout this period. Further details regarding training will be circulated to pooled candidates following selection. There may be some candidates who are held in the pool but are not offered a role. We will hold an initial selection process that may include a written scenario test. The second stage, comprised of group sessions and a formal panel interview, will take place over two/three days during week commencing 29 July 2019. You will receive a generous annual leave entitlement but may be required to work on occasional Bank Holidays or University closure days.

Applicants should upload a single document containing:

  • Information about how you fit the essential and desirable criteria for the role (1 side of A4).
  • A response of 300 words to the following question: ‘You are approached by a student who tells you that her flatmates are stealing her food. What factors do you need to consider? How would you respond?’.

The closing date for applications is midnight on Tuesday 8th October 2019.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
