The Faculty of Educational Sciences invites applications for the position of UNIVERSITY LECTURER IN CRAFT SCIENCE for a permanent appointment beginning on 1 January 2020.

The appointee’s research duties will focus on craft science, education, teaching and teacher education. He or she will also provide multimaterial craft teaching, particularly in the Study Track for Craft Teachers, and will supervise students’ teaching practice and theses. The university lecturer will participate in the activities of the Study Track for Craft Teachers and will actively engage in Finnish and international specialist networks in the field. The appointee’s other duties will include administrative tasks related to teaching.

APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

The appointee must hold an applicable doctoral degree and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses. Because the appointee must also supervise students’ teaching practice, he or she must have completed pedagogical studies for teachers (60 cr). The qualifications required of a craft teacher, experience in teaching hard materials (previously known as technical crafts) and experience in seminar- and lecture-based university teaching in education, particularly teacher education, will be considered assets. In addition, the appointee must be willing and able to develop his or her skills and participate actively in teaching-related research and development projects in Finnish and international networks.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to the following:

  • Scientific publications
  • Other scholarly activities
  • Teaching and supervision experience and other teaching merits
  • Pedagogical training
  • Development of teaching
  • Production of learning material
  • Demonstration of teaching skills

According to the Government Decree on Universities, university lecturers are required to be competent in the language in which they provide instruction, in other words, Finnish or Swedish. They must also have at least satisfactory oral and written proficiency in both languages. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. However, applicants should note that most of the teaching associated with the present position will take place in Finnish. If the appointee does not speak Finnish, he or she must acquire the required proficiency in Finnish within three years from the beginning of employment. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good proficiency in English.

The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,300 to €5,000, depending on his or her qualifications and previous experience. There is a six-month trial period for the position.
