NIASRA is a high-performing research institute in the School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics (SMAS) at the University of Wollongong. It currently contains the Centre for Bioinformatics and Biometry (which focusses on agriculture, forestry and other sustainable primary industries), the Centre for Environmental Informatics, the Centre for Sample Survey Methodology, and the Statistical Consulting Centre. 

NIASRA will have a fundamental and primary role in the University’s strategic transformative priority in developing data science, data analytics and decision analysis at UOW, with a focus on translation and impact. In the near future a new Centre for Health and Social Analytics (CHSA) is planned within NIASRA, a major initiative in the development of health, social and medical statistics that aims to effectively exploit large and complex databases to improve the analytic capacity that underpins significant improvement in the health and wellbeing of people and communities. 

As part of its further development of statistical science, the University is seeking to appoint a Professor in Statistics and Director of NIASRA.

The appointee will provide outstanding leadership in the further development of NIASRA and the Statistics discipline. The Director of NIASRA is also expected to play a fundamental leadership role in the University’s development of data and decision sciences and analytics. The appointee will develop and maintain relationships with external organisations and UOW researchers involving grant-based and contract research, and major consulting projects. The person appointed must be committed to the development of NIASRA as a world-class research institute with international profile in several areas of Applied Statistics and its role in developing data science and analytics.

As a staff member in SMAS, this position will contribute to the development of the Statistics curriculum and the programme of training and professional education. The position will undertake some undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and HDR supervision in Statistics.
