The Research and Evaluation Lead is a newly created role jointly managed by Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI) and Institute for Sustainable Futures (ISF). The Research and Evaluation Lead’s role is to contribute to the enhancement of social impact at UTS through supporting the ongoing strategic development of the Social Impact Framework and the strategic rollout of the university’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The position reports to Mitra Gusheh - Executive Manager, Social Impact, with input from Cynthia Mitchell - Deputy Director, Institute for Sustainable Futures. The position will be based in the central location of UTS’ Ultimo campus.

Describe the purpose of the role:

The Research and Evaluation Lead contributes to the enhancement of social impact at UTS through supporting the ongoing strategic development of the UTS Social Impact Framework and the strategic rollout of the university’s commitment to the SDGs. The role will have responsibility over the management of related research and evaluation initiatives and developing, delivering and/or overseeing capability building programs across teaching, research, and administration/operations. The incumbent will work closely with relevant CSJI and ISF management to provide social impact research and evaluation expertise and advice, making a particular contribution to local and global reporting and advocacy requirements in relation to social impact and the SDGs.

Main duties/responsibilities:

  • Develop and review the strategic direction and process systems for the Social Impact Framework;
  • Contribute to research in areas relating to the Social Impact Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Communicate, influence and offer thought leadership in areas relating to the Social Impact Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Operationalise the Social Impact Framework and UTS’ SDG commitment, ensuring the effective delivery of societal impact research and evaluation initiatives and capability building programs;
  • Provide leadership in the development of effective teams

Main skills/experience required:

  • Capacity to develop strategies for complex large-scale organisations, and independently lead their execution, with and through others, in a changing environment.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and reviewing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms in a social research environment, drawing on mixed methodologies that gather both quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Extensive experience in designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation and building the capability of others for their implementation.
  • Knowledge of the social impact field and theory and the sustainable development goals.
  • Evidence of building relationships and collaborating with diverse stakeholders including community, government and the private sector.
  • Ability to communicate societal impacts and outcomes through a range of responsive approaches, including academic outputs, formal reports, policy papers, workshops and seminars, and popular media.
  • High level of organisational skills, with the ability to operate as part of, and lead and manage teams.
  • A postgraduate degree (preferably a PhD) in a related discipline or equivalent research or work experience.

Remuneration & Benefits
Base Salary Range:
$126,402 to $145,162 pa (Level C)

This role attracts up to 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to the base salary.

This position is full-time and appointment will be made on a fixed term basis for 3 years.
