The School of Geographical Sciences seeks to recruit a Research Associate to participate in a new and exciting GCRF funded project “Glacial Flour Power – a transdisciplinary investigation of the potential of glacial flour in supporting crop yields and promoting soil care in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH).” The successful candidate will join a diverse team of glaciologists, plant scientists, cultural geographers and ecologists to work on the socio-cultural component of this transdisciplinary project, which aims to explore the science of a novel soil fertility treatment via sediments released from melting glaciers (“glacial flour”) along with in-depth socio-ecological research into the histories, cultures, and politics of soil degradation and treatments. The socio-cultural component will develop a deep understanding of a) the political ecology of the West Indian Himalaya, in terms of long term relationships between labour, capital and soil fertility b) the history of soil fertility practices, and how food security is imagined/practiced and c) the problems rural communities face that could be remedied by glacial flour.

The Research Associate will also be involved in co-leading a series of field-based dialogues and soil experiments in conjunction with glacial scientists in the project and community researchers.

The full-time post is open to be filled from 1 December 2019 or at the successful candidate's earliest availability. The post will be based within the School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol, working closely with other researchers and project partners in Bristol and the HKH, with substantial time based in India.
