RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND TRAINING (RET) ASSOCIATE, Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL)-Global-Research, Education, and Training (RET) Group, to develop new tools for J-PAL research projects (e.g., developing code, packages, programs, etc.) that increase the efficiency of research staff.  Will think systematically about RCT data, its properties, and how it’s used by surveying users and reading associated research papers; document and prepare research datasets for publication, including gathering metadata used in methods research and building tools that streamline and facilitate these tasks; conduct data analysis and answer questions on research transparency with J-PAL data; review new randomized trials submitted to the registry and analyze registry entries; research and design teaching modules and prepare presentations, case studies, and manuals to train researchers/research staff/policymakers on randomized evaluation methods and the responsible use of data in research; and support J-PAL’s online course portfolio, including MIT’s new MicroMasters program, by assisting students with data analysis assignments.  

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in economics, political science, education, public policy, international development, or related field; training in and strong technical understanding of randomized impact evaluations; at least two years’ work experience (may include experience gained as an undergraduate) that includes experience in quantitative data analysis, economics, or related discipline; interest in poverty alleviation policy/research as demonstrated by coursework and/or study or work abroad; knowledge of data management, data analysis, and econometrics; solid command of (or willingness to learn) Stata or knowledge of R or other analytics programs; and MS Office proficiency (PowerPoint, Excel).

PREFERRED: interest in and experience with cleaning and analysis of large, complex data sets; LaTeX knowledge; exposure to MATLAB, Python, or Julia; and experience conducting field research in developing countries.  Job #18023
