Western Sydney University is looking for a lawyer to join its in-house legal team.

The Office of General Counsel (OGC) provides legal services and advice to assist the University in meeting its strategic objectives. The OGC has principal responsibility for the management, oversight, coordination and provision of all legal advice and services within or on behalf of the University.  Its focus is to provide services and advice that are aligned with the core educational and business functions and interests of the University.

The Lawyer, Litigation and Disputes is an exciting role for a dynamic and proactive person who wishes to work in an in-house legal environment and to further his or her career.  The role offers the opportunity to be involved in interesting and varied work in a progressive and flexible environment. 

The successful applicant will have at least 3 years’ post admission experience in litigation (preferably including administrative law) and policy development.  The successful applicant will be highly motivated, have excellent communication and organisational skills, as well as the ability to work reasonably independently within a team environment.

Key responsibilities include:

  • providing legal services and advice to the senior executive and management, academic and administrative units within the University across a wide variety of potential dispute or complaint areas, including unlawful discrimination, freedom of information, privacy, student misconduct, academic appeals and disputes more generally;
  • managing disputes and litigation outsourced to the University’s panel firms; and
  • working with the University Secretary and General Counsel and key University stakeholders to proactively identify and minimise legal risk through a range of policy and training initiatives.

Remuneration Package: HEW Level 9 $134,458 to $143,591 p.a. (comprising Salary of $113,619 to $121,336 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading)
