UNSW Medicine is a national leader in learning, teaching and research, with close affiliations to a number of Australia’s finest hospitals, research institutes and health care organisations. The School of Women’s & Children’s Health (SWCH) is comprised of the clinical disciplines of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics, and the National Perinatal Epidemiology Statistics Unit (NPESU). The Population Child Health group within SWCH is an integrated multidisciplinary translational research team working across the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network with partners in Local Health Districts, State and Commonwealth governments, to inform service delivery and policy through innovation, collaboration, research, policy development and advocacy. The focus of the group is on translational research that will have a direct impact on the everyday lives of children, especially children and young people whose voices often go unheard, such as those from Aboriginal, refugee and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and those living in socioeconomic disadvantage or out of home care.

We are seeking a Research Associate who will work within the new Population Child Health research group and will support research service and develop novel research by increasing quality publication output and grant income with the ultimate aim of improving the health, wellbeing and development of children and young people locally, nationally and internationally. You will work with collaborators within UNSW e.g. at the Centre for Big Data and in other Universities e.g. The University of Sydney, Population Child health Group.  

About the role:

  • $76K – $102K plus 9.5% superannuation and leave loading
  • Fixed term for 12 months with potential for extension
  • Full-time (35 hours/week)

As a Research Associate you will provide high level statistical and research design and support to the Population Child Health Research Group; conduct quantitative analysis of existing linked administrative data sets including the NSW “KIDS DATA” (largest linked administrative data set for children in NSW) and POCLS (linked data set for children in out of home care) data sets; write and submit ethics submissions as well as peer reviewed publications; contribute to writing grant applications.

About You:

To be successful in the role you will have:

  • A postgraduate degree in Epidemiology/Statistics or related discipline, or an appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training and/or professional accreditation.
  • Competency in a range of statistical software preferably R, SAS and or Stata and previous experience working with large sets of data.
  • Proven initiative and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated ability to work both independently and part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and levels of seniority
  • Proven high level organisational skills, including the ability to establish priorities, time management, with excellent attention to detail
