Position Description

The John F Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University is seeking experienced practitioners in African Development to teach in its degree and executive programs. We are especially interested in applicants who have had substantial management or policy experience in government, in international organizations, in the not-for-profit sector, or in business, and who have a talent for and interest in teaching. We seek individuals with expertise in either (or both) sub-Saharan Africa or North Africa, and backgrounds in economics, politics, and institutions.

The mission of Harvard Kennedy School is to improve public policy and public leadership across the United States and around the world, so people can lead safer, freer, and more prosperous lives. The school serves about 1100 degree program students and about 4000 executive program participants each year. The HKS international development group provides an active and engaging research environment, hosting numerous seminar series and high-profile events each year. Our approach to international development training is economics-centered, but also multidisciplinary; we combine rigorous training in analytical and quantitative methods with an emphasis on policy and practice.

Applicants must be willing and able to successfully teach students in our degree programs, as well as the experienced professionals in our executive education programs. An understanding of the conceptual and social science underpinnings of public policy and management, and the ability to convey conceptual as well as practical knowledge are crucial, as is commitment to the public service mission of Harvard Kennedy School. A doctoral, professional or other higher degree is preferred.

We expect to make one or more full-time appointments at the level of non-tenured Professor of Practice or Lecturer.

Please submit application materials, including a cover letter, CV, relevant publications (if any) and teaching statement to: http://academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/9248 We are accepting applications immediately and will begin reviewing them on November 30, 2019.
