The AAPP brings together government and non-government entities to deliver and lead a significant part of the national Antarctic science program. The partnership is led by the University of Tasmania (UTAS), and includes the Australian Antarctic Division, CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere, Geoscience Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology, the Tasmanian State Government and Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System.

The Opportunity

The Research Associate – Sea Ice-Ocean Interaction Scientist position will contribute to the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership (AAPP), a new research program funded through the Antarctic Science Collaboration Initiative of the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. The Research Associate – Sea Ice-Ocean Interaction Scientist will investigate the role of the Southern Ocean in driving variability and trends in Antarctic sea-ice distribution, mass and properties, and the processes and mechanisms involved (including feedbacks).

Key Accountabilities for Level A and B:

  • Undertake innovative research using a combination of theoretical, numerical and observational analysis to investigate:
    • The role of the Southern Ocean in driving variability and trends in Antarctic sea-ice distribution (extent and seasonality), properties and mass; and
    • The processes and mechanisms involved (including feedbacks).
  • Undertake assessment of the representation of the Southern Ocean and sea ice-ocean interaction processes and mechanisms (including feedbacks) in coupled climate models and carry out innovative work towards reducing model biases, in order to improve model simulation of Antarctic sea-ice trends and variability.
  • Undertake innovative research, in collaboration with Theme 1 (Antarctica’s Influence on Climate and Sea Level), on the interaction of sea ice with the ice sheet and on the role of sea ice in modulating ocean-ice sheet interaction processes.

Key Accountabilities specific for Level C:

  • Undertake high-quality research of national and increasingly of international standing, secure external competitive grant and other funding where possible, publish research findings and supervise higher degree by research students, in order to meet and regularly exceed the University’s research attributes for Level C.
  • Lead and undertake innovative research, in collaboration with Theme 1 (Antarctica’s Influence on Climate and Sea Level), on the interaction of sea ice with the ice sheet and on the role of sea ice in modulating ocean-ice sheet interaction processes.

Your Application

To be successful in the role, for Level A and B, your application will need to demonstrate:

  • A PhD in a relevant area of science (e.g., sea ice physics, polar physical oceanography or climate science), preferably with postdoctoral experience relevant to the position e.g., sea ice-ocean interaction research, and detection and attribution of trends and variability in the polar ocean-sea ice-atmosphere system.
  • Demonstrated high-level knowledge and understanding of coupled sea-ice and polar-ocean processes, high-latitude meteorology and the polar Southern Ocean’s role in climate.
  • High-level quantitative (computer programming and analytical) skills, as demonstrated through analysis, integration and interpretation of a diverse range of complex data (e.g., oceanographic, sea ice or related data) and numerical simulations.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of, and/or experience in, sea-ice/climate modelling, and assessment of model performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out original, independent and innovative research with a minimum of direct supervision, leading to highly-regarded publications in peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Additionally, for Level C, your application will need to demonstrate:

  • A PhD in a relevant area of science (e.g., sea-ice physics, polar physical oceanography or climate science), with experience relevant to the position e.g., sea ice-ocean interactions research, and detection and attribution of trends and variability in the polar ocean-sea ice-atmosphere system.
  • A strong record in, and continuing commitment to, research that has achieved international recognition and made notable contributions to the field of sea-ice physics, polar oceanography or climate science, demonstrated by a record of high-quality publications, presentations at conferences and success in securing external competitive and other funding.

Remuneration

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A, B or C and will have a total remuneration package of up to $158,046 comprising base salary within the range of $71,443 to $135,082 plus 17% superannuation.
